After careful consideration we observed that there was a larger necessity to provide urgent support for infrastructural necessities than anticipated. Thank you again for hearing us and responding to our call.
Open Call
For Artists, Collectives and Associations
In collaboration, Berlin contemporary arts institution Neuer Berliner Kunstverein (n.b.k.) and new organizational structure ASA (Autonomous Space Agency) seek proposals from individuals, collectives and associations developing independent content, freedom of speech, and communal determination. This call seeks proposals that imagine, create, and maintain autonomous spaces in places where they are intended or have been destroyed.
Without exclusivity or essentialism, we look to the larger Mesopotamia region, inspired by multiplicity of the Euphrates and Tigris. We encourage proposals that focus on the creation of space for common human use – the commons and commonalities of a region that is defined by a diversity of peoples, languages, and cultures.
The open-call is primarily directed to artists and collectives who:
are specifically from this geographical context
are currently based there
are not able or willing to be there because of current urgencies
critically relate their practice to the region with its history, peoples, languages
would like to make informed contributions to its rich context.
The applicants are requested to define the necessity, relevance and form of their proposals and to position them in relation to the politics, urgencies, and currencies of our time. Proposals can be artistic in an expanded sense. They can relate to freedom, peace, property, struggle or friendship, love, grief, songs, gardens, or debris. Besides artistic imagination and considerations of viability, urgent needs will be an important factor in the jury’s decision-making.
Fifteen grants of 3000 Euro are available. There are no application requirements; applicants are invited to formulate and establish their conversations with us immediately through this process. Applications are accepted in Turkish, Arabic, Kurmanci, Sorani, and English.
Please send your application to admission@nbk.org by August 31st, 2017. Format of the application: Text document (doc, odt) or PDF
Maximum size: 10 MB
An international jury will decide on proposals in mid-October 2017.
Grant recipients will be notified shortly after.
The grant is to be understood as a one-time emergency measure and does not require a report on activities. Grant recipients and n.b.k. will look for the most efficient way to transfer the grant.
